I. Why do we disobey? (Jon. 1:1-3; 3:10-4:5, 9-11)
A. We are very disappointed or disillusioned with God or with His people
B. We become very angry and resentful at God
C. Things that we expected to happen did not happen
D. We develop a hardened heart and conscience
II. The consequences of Disobedience
A. We withdraw and hide from God and the body of believers (Jon. 1:1-3, Gen. 3:10; Gen. 4:16; Heb. 10:25)
B. We become self-centered and lose our concern and compassion for others (Jon. 1:5-6; Phil. 2:3-4; 1 Jn. 4:16-18)
C. We become very embittered and hardened (Jon. 4:3, 9; Eph. 4:31; Heb. 12:15)
D. We become ashamed of being known as a believer (Jon. 1:7-10; 2 Tim. 2:15; 1 Pet. 2:12)
E. We will suffer the consequences of persistent sin (Jon. 1:11-15; Jon. 1:17-2:10; Rom. 1:21-32)
III. Big contrast between Jonah and the other characters
Jonah
was selfish, ashamed, and unrepentant
was unrepentant and and hid from God
disobeyed God's voice
Other Characters
The ship crew cared about others, they confessed and worshipped God
The king of Nineveh the people fasted, prayed, and repented
The ship crew, the Ninevites, the fish, the plant, and the worm obeyed God

I. He requires us to have unity (Acts 4: 32a; Phil. 1: 27; Eph. 4: 3-6; Rom. 15: 5-6)
a) Unity begins in our fellowship
b) Unity is based on our standing in Christ (1 John 1: 3-4)
II. He requires us to have solid preaching (Acts 4: 33a; 1 Tim. 4: 13; 1 Cor. 1: 17; 2 Tim. 4: 1-5; 2 Cor. 5: 18; 1 Cor. 1: 23)
The primary duty of the pastor is to equip the saints through the preaching and teaching of the Word (Eph. 4: 11-12)
III. He requires us to have incredible sensitivity to each other (Acts 4: 32b; Eph. 4: 15-16; 1 John 3: 16-18)
The proper perspective regarding material possessions.
IV. He requires purity in His church (Acts 5: 1-11; 1 Cor. 5: 6-7; Matt. 18: 15-20; Gal. 6: 1-2; James 5: 19-20)

Introduction : Psalms have categories and structures!
The Structure of Psalm 8
I. The Call to Praise (v.1a): Proclamation of the Majesty of God's name in all the earth!
II. The Cause(s) for Praise (vv. 1b-8)
A. Summary Statement (1b): The Majestic Lord has displayed His splendor above the heavens!
B. Two Specific Illustrations (vv. 2-8)
1st Illustration (v.2) : God's splendor is displayed in His use of children's praise to silence God's enemies.
2nd Illustration (vv. 3-8): God's splendor is also displayed in His use of "lowly man" to carry out His dominion over His creation.
(v.3) The backdrop is creation, God's "fingerwork"
(v. 4) The amazing thing is Creator God's thoughts of finite man!
(vv. 5-6) God has granted man glory and dominion over God's created order
III. Renewed Call to Praise (v.9): Proclamation of the Majesty of God's name in all the earth!

Have I conformed my mind to the teachings of Scripture?
B. How does God speak to us today?
Through Scripture which is correctly interpreted - (2 Tim. 3: 16-17; Ps. 119: 105; Col. 3: 16)
Through the wise advice and feedback of people - (Prov. 11: 14; Prov. 15:22)
a) Through the wise advice and feedback of spiritually mature believers (Ex. 18: 17-23; Deut. 19: 15; Matt. 18: 15-20; Acts 15: 12-21)
b) Through the informed advice of people with expertise and experience - (Prov. 11: 14; Prov. 15: 22)
Through God's peace as a result of fervent prayer - (Phil. 4: 6-7; Col. 3: 16)
Through circumstances (Luke 21: 25-28; Prov. 21: 31; 1 Chron.12:32)

Remember that God is your Shepherd and the Holy Spirit is your Counselor
God desires our being more than our doing
