Cold Medications                                                     See    Flu Medications

Antihistamines/ Decongestants:
Actifed (triprolidine 2.5 mg/ pseudoephedrine 60 mg) tid
ChlorTrimeton (chlorpheniramine 4, 8, 12 mg) 4 mg tid or 8-12 mg bid
Deconamine SR/ Novafed-A (chlorpheniramine 8 mg/ pseudoephedrine 120 mg)

Cough Medications:
For DM pts (No sugar or alcohol cough med)
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) 25 -50 mg PO q4-6hr
Benadryl D (dephenhydramine 25 mg  + pseudoephedrine 60 mg) 1 tab qid
Cerose DM (DM 15 mg/ chlorpheniramine 4 mg, phenylephrine 10 mg) 1 tsp qid
Safe Tussin 30 (DM 30 mg/ guaifenesin 200 mg) 1 tsp bid
Hycodan (hydrocodone 5 mg/ homatropine methybromide 1.5 mg) in tab or 5 mL q4-6h
Vicodin-Tuss (hydrocodone 5 mg/ guaifenesin 100 mg/ 5 ml) 1 tsp q4-6h
Brontex (codeine 10 mg/ guaifenesin 300 mg) 1 tab q4h

Other cough med:

Cheratussin AC (= Robitussin AC) 10-100 MG/5 ML Oral Liquid  1-2 teaspoons qid
Robitussin-AC (codeine 10mg/ guaifenesin 100mg) 1 - 2 tsp q4h
Robitussin-DAC (codeine 10mg/ guaifenesin 100mg/ pseudoephedrine 30mg) 2 tsp q4h

Hycotuss (hydrocodone 5 mg/ guafenesin 100 mg + alcohol)
Novahistine DH (chlorpheniramine/pseudoephedrine/codeine) 2 tsp q4-6h
Mucinex (Guafenesin 600 mg) 1 tab bid  
Mucinex D
(Guafenesin 600 mg +  pseudoephedrine 60 mg)  1-2 tab BID
Mucinex DM (Guafenesin 600 mg + dextromethorphan 30 mg) 1-2 tab BID prn cough
Phenergan (promethazine 12.5, 25, 50 mg) 1-2 teaspoons qid

Phenergan VC with codeine (phenergan 6.25, phenylephrine 5 mg/ codeine 10 mg /5mL) 1-2 tsp q4h

Rondec-DM (DM 15mg/ carbinoxamine 4 mg/ pseudoephedrine 60mg) 1 tsp qid
Tussionex (hydrocodone 10mg/ chlorpheniramine 8 mg/ 5 mL) 1 tsp bid
Tessalon Perle (benzonatate) 100 mg  1 capsule tid

 

Flu (Influenza A) Medications:
Influenza (Flu)  is usually a severe illness characterized by:
  • Abrupt onset of fever (>101.3 F or 38.3 C), plus
  • Non-productive cough & coryza/sore thros, plus
  • Headache/ myalgia

Prophylaxis & Treatment for Influenza Virus Infection:

  • Flu vaccine
  • Tamiflu/ Oseltamivir 75 mg cap bid PO x 5 days for Influenza A & B in adults.   (Neuraminidase Inhibitor)
    (JAMA. Oct. 6,1999;282:1240-1246 Frederick G. Hayden, etc)
    Conclusions: Oseltamivir administered daily for six weeks by the oral route is safe and effective for the prevention of influenza. (N Engl J Med Oct.28,1999;341:1336-43.; See also Editorial ) .   Adverse effects: nausea & vomiting, headache.
  • Relenza® /Zanamivir Diskhaler 10 mg daily by oral inhalation 2 puffs bid x 5 days for Influenza A & B, age >12 yo.  (Neuraminidase Inhibitor)
    (JAMA July 7, 1999:282:31 Arnold S. Monto, etc.)
    Adverse effects: nasal & throat discomfort, cough, bronchospasm, headache.
  • Amantadine/Symmetrel 100 mg cap bid for adult x 10-14 days
    Adverse effects: may cause nausea, dizziness, insomnia, depression, anxiety, irritability, hallucinations, seizures, anorexia, dry mouth, etc.
  • Rimantadine/Flumadine 100 mg tab bid for adult x 7-10 days
    Adverse effects: similar to amantadine but with less frequency & severity.

 

For recurrent cold sores:
  • Denavir/Penciclovir 1% cream q2h for 4 days.
  • Aphthasol (Amlexanox oral paste) 5 % dab on affected qid till healed (for oral aphthous ulcers)
