TOC  | ID BRUCELLOSIS
Caused by Brucella organism, in milk, dairy product or meat packing, farmer personnels.

SX:
Intermittent fever & chills, weakness, malaise, myalgia, headache, weight loss, anorexia; occasionally pain or tenderness over the vertebrae or nerve root distribution, acute arthritis, splenomegaly, osteomyelitis, etc.

DX:
WBC may be normal, accompanied by mild lymphocytosis; rise of agglutinin titers of >1:160 by the third week; also positive culture.

RX:
Tetracycline 500 mg qid PO for 3 weeks; SeptraDS, & tetracycline combined with rifampin or streptomycin may be given for more severe case, as involving meningitis, endocarditis, or osteoarticular infection
